Russ Canick’s Recovery Blog

Today was another busy day for Russ and “the ball”. Tuan wants to work with him a few more sessions with the ball and being able to hold himself up. Today, as you can see by the pictures, Tuan had him kneeling and pushing against the ball with his hands and arms. He did a pretty good job. Tuan even had him squeezing his butt cheeks together, which he can do!

Laura had him working more with the loops and being able to pull himself over and then slowly rolling back over to his back. He is getting stronger with this exercise too.

His therapy sessions usually leave him pretty tired, but he is doing so good! We are going to start adding more days of standing frame and e- stem here at the house during the week! He has come such a very long way in such a short time!

Russ had a very good and tiring day today, but it was a great one. Tuan had Russ sitting on a ball and he did very good with his balance. The other therapist with Tuan today said that Russ was doing almost all of the work!
Next week Tuan wants to stand Russ at the parallel bars and see just how strong he truly is!

This is kind of a family update….

Jon and Jill got married on Friday! We all had such a wonderful time. If you have face book and you are any friends of this crew you will be able to find many photos!!!!

Russ had a great therapy session today. He is down to once a week for the rest of the year. Today Tuan had him sitting and balancing, and he is talking about having him try and hold himself up at the parallel bars! He is thinking that Russ is getting strong enough to hold himself up!

Immanuel has opened the new Rehab Center and it is really nice. They are just waiting for the parallel bars to be installed, and that is when Tuan will be trying out the new challenge.

Russ’ OT had him working with loops today. The pictures I am posting show how this works. He is able to pull himself over to his side!!!

Life continues to improve all the time for Russ!!! He was pretty excited and very tired today after session.

First off I want to thank everyone who came out to the benefit for Russ last night! He had a great time, and Lou and I really enjoy seeing all of his friends!

For Valentines Lou is buying me a new car!!! I will go and sign for it tomorrow. I am getting a Nissan Rouge, now my Mom will be able to get in and out of my car much easier!

I will post some pics of the benefit later this week!

Russ’ arms are getting so strong. He is now lifting his arms at his ELBOWS when he takes them off the arms of his chair…

Russ is also enjoying his freedom to text and dial his phone on his own. We tried setting up a laptop, but the arm support that he wears hits the laptop and so he can’t get to the keyboard…we need to talk to the OT about some modifications, or new ideas!

Our main bathroom is just about ready to use! We are hoping for the first shower tomorrow night!!!!
Don’t forget the benefit on Saturday!

A quick note….Wed. at a Doctors appointment, Russ was able to feel, what I call a tuning forks, vibrations on his feet! This was a first! Russ has been able to feel his feet when his Dad messes with them in the mornings! He is getting more feeling to his legs, he could also feel the vibrations in his hands, which we knew he would. He has no sensations in his ring and little fingers on both hands.

His balance is still going strong!

Russ is also texting allot more these days! Send him a text, and if he is able to answer you back I am sure that he will.

Russ spent about an hour just sitting and texting this afternoon….he was laughing and said that his arm was dead!!!

Now if you send him a text message, he will be able to get back with you.

The move for Russ seemed to take all day. We finally got back here around 5:00pm! I have been busy trying to organize all of his things, while he is out with some friends! I told him not to be too late because I want to go to bed….

Life is good and the workers are really coming along with the remodel…..I have some new walls tonight!!!

Russ had a great day at PT today. He was able to sit and super balance today. Russ himself was moving around while sitting and he did not tip over….he asked Tuan today if he could sit in a regular wheel chair again some time soon. Tuan told him he would let him do that. I know his goal right now is to just use a wheelchair that isn’t electric.

Our house is being modified very quickly! Russ will be back home tomorrow. We will be meeting at Russ’ around 9 am, so if you would like to come and help us pack that would be great!

Remember to keep the 13th of Feb open for the benefit at the Hideout….
