Russ Canick’s Recovery Blog

A quick note….Wed. at a Doctors appointment, Russ was able to feel, what I call a tuning forks, vibrations on his feet! This was a first! Russ has been able to feel his feet when his Dad messes with them in the mornings! He is getting more feeling to his legs, he could also feel the vibrations in his hands, which we knew he would. He has no sensations in his ring and little fingers on both hands.

His balance is still going strong!

Russ is also texting allot more these days! Send him a text, and if he is able to answer you back I am sure that he will.

Russ spent about an hour just sitting and texting this afternoon….he was laughing and said that his arm was dead!!!

Now if you send him a text message, he will be able to get back with you.

The move for Russ seemed to take all day. We finally got back here around 5:00pm! I have been busy trying to organize all of his things, while he is out with some friends! I told him not to be too late because I want to go to bed….

Life is good and the workers are really coming along with the remodel…..I have some new walls tonight!!!

Russ had a great day at PT today. He was able to sit and super balance today. Russ himself was moving around while sitting and he did not tip over….he asked Tuan today if he could sit in a regular wheel chair again some time soon. Tuan told him he would let him do that. I know his goal right now is to just use a wheelchair that isn’t electric.

Our house is being modified very quickly! Russ will be back home tomorrow. We will be meeting at Russ’ around 9 am, so if you would like to come and help us pack that would be great!

Remember to keep the 13th of Feb open for the benefit at the Hideout….

Just a quick note to let you know that thee is another benefit coming up on the 13 Feb, it is going to be at the Hideout….

Russ “called” me today! The OT was able to have Russ hold a pencil, with the aide of the support that goes across his hand that holds the pencil, and with his fore finger and thumb he was able to control the pencil and use his phone to dial OUT…he also sent a text to one of his Madonna friends….He just continues to thrive!

On Monday the OT started helping him to open the door handles that look like levers…..

Today was just great for Russ at therapy….I put a video out on my Facebook that you can check out…I also have some pictures I will post here today.
He was able to sit for 5mins today before Tuan started working with him again. I think he could have sat by himself for much longer. When he was sitting for the 5mins he had his hands out by his sides, and then Tuan had him put his hands in his lap and he was still able to sit again by himself. Tuan was pushing on him to check his balance with his hands in his lap and he was able to stay up!!! It was just fantastic. He even mentioned that he could feel his butt!!!

Today has just been wonderful!!!

Russ had a great day at Therapy today!

This picture is Russ working with his OT Jarrod. The device they use is called the “Deltoids worker” I do not know its real name, but the function is just great. It is making Russ’ arms so very strong!

They use this to help make his arms strong by adding weights to the motions. Jarrod has Russ touching his right knee, Left waist area, and his left shoulder. Russ can do allot of these functions because of the gravity being gone. He worked very hard today with the added weights, and this was the first time to make the whole session that way.

His balance on the mat is getting better too! Longer sitting time each time. He can really feel his muscles in his back!

Russ also on Saturday offered his right hand in a hand shake just by reflex! He didn’t have to think about what he was doing!

I have a few things to report today!

First of all, Russ was able to lift his LEFT ARM off of the arm rest last night. He bent it at the elbow and he held it up!!!! I guess this arm doesn’t want to be left behind!

Second, Seth and Lisa have a new baby boy born on the 6th of January. His name is Zackary, he is having breathing problems, and he too is in need of prayers. The hospital is going to keep him another 10-14 days.

On a good note, our friend Bill, who I wrote about a few days ago, is making slow but steady progress!

I thought that 2010 would be a bit nicer to all of us, but I guess we all get stronger through these challenges.

I love you all so very much, and I know that the whole family is so very blest by your prayers and love!
